Plot and Characters
Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves. Ida is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life; Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun; and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. He meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave. Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida. They are guilt-stricken when this nearly breaks Ida’s heart.
Ida (Female 50+) Ida is not used to being alone after being married to Murry, but she doesn’t feel ready to start dating again, at least not until she runs into an old friend who recently lost his wife. This role requires a bit of cha-cha dancing.
Lucille (Female 50+) Lucille is eager to get her feet back in the waters of dating, partly as a revenge against her late husband Harry, who often cheated on her, and partly because she’s very lonely. She is quite the flirt and is very concerned about her appearance. She is jealous of Ida, who has snagged a good man before she does. This role requires a bit of cha-cha dancing and smoking, and has milk thrown in her face.
Doris (Female 50+) Doris remains fiercely loyal to her late husband Abe and takes her responsibilities as a widow very seriously. She is not interested in a new relationship and is appalled when one of her friends starts dating again. Doris has heart issues and is not very adventurous. This role requires a bit of cha-cha dancing, and has wine thrown in her face.
Sam (Male 50+) Sam is the local owner of a butcher shop. He knows Ida and Doris because they have been his customers. Sam is recently a widower and is a bit lonely, and very shy. Over the course of the play, he and Ida slowly become a pair.

Mildred (Female 25-35): This role is primarily backstage with some onstage spoken dialogue
